বাংলাদেশের দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন গণতান্ত্রিক, গ্রহণযোগ্য, শান্তিপূর্ণ ও অংশগ্রহণমূলক দেখতে চায় পুরো বিশ্ব এমন কথা জানিয়েছেন ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের (ইইউ) রাষ্ট্রদূত চার্লস হোয়াইটলি।তিনি বলেন, ‘সংসদ নির্বাচন নিয়ে বিস্তারিত মতবিনিময় হয়েছে। প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার ও তার টিম খোলামেলা আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়েছেন। নির্বাচনের সার্বিক প্রস্তুতি সম্পর্কে জেনেছি। আমরা আশাকরি গণতান্ত্রিক, গ্রহণযোগ্য ও অংগ্রহণমূলক নির্বাচন হবে। পুরো বিশ্বও এটি দেখতে চায়।’বুধবার (২৯ নভেম্বর) নির্বাচন ভবনে নির্বাচন কমিশনের (ইসি) সঙ্গে বৈঠক শেষে সাংবাদিকদের কাছে এমন মন্তব্য করেন ইইউ রাষ্ট্রদূত। এ সময় তিনি কোনো প্রশ্ন নিতে চান না বলে জানান। সাংবাদিকরা তারপরও ভোটের পরিবেশ নিয়ে কোনো আলোচনা হয়েছে কি না জানতে চান। জবাবে হোয়াইটলি বলেন, ‘না, ধন্যবাদ।’ বৈঠক শেষে সিইসি কাজী হাবিবুল আউয়াল বলেন, ‘তারা আগেও একাধিকবার এসেছেন। তাদের একটা এক্সপার্ট ইলেকশন পর্যবেক্ষণ টিম আসবেন বলে জানিয়েছেন। ইতোমধ্যে চারজন এসেছেন। তারা দীর্ঘ সময় আমাদের প্রস্তুতি সম্পর্কে জেনেছেন। আমাদের প্রস্তুতিটা অনেক দূর এগিয়ে গেছে এটা তারা জানতেন না।
